Best Deep Dish Pizza in Chicago

  1. The pizza was good and the server was extremely nice. But paying $50 for 1 pizza is a bit extreme especially when it’s just OK. I was told this was the best pizza place in Chicago and after seeing how packed it was and waiting over an hour just to get a table, I figured it was going to melt my taste buds biting into this pizza. Once we were seated and the pizza arrived it looked amazing, everything was upside-down. However the only thing that melted was the hopes of being the best pizza I have ever tasted. Come to find out for about $15 I can purchase everything and make a better pizza myself which is what I usually do at home and will continue doing. Note to self: next trip to Chicago, pack your own pizza ingredients.

This is a pretty good restaurant. Particularly the staff are extremely well trained, they were all very polite and accommodating, I suspect they’re trained to say “enjoy your meal” because we heard that a couple times which was nice, and they were all pleasant to talk with.

We had to order the famous Chicago deep dish and went with their namesake Lou’s. Since there was a wait for it we had the spinach bread as an appetizer which was great. It’s heavy on the cheese though so maybe not the best appetizer before pizza.

Then after our wait we finally got our pizza which unfortunately was a bit anticlimactic. It was pretty good with some salt and pepper and the crust was baked better than other deep dish pizzas I’ve had, but besides that it was something you could order in any old deep dish pizza joint outside of Chicago. I’ve had better ones where they seemingly cook at a higher temperature in a wood-fired oven where you get some nice smokey flavors and the very top layer of cheese is hardened from the heat so you get an extra satisfying texture from biting through the top shell to reach more gooey cheese and toppings underneath. Also the sauce on the pizza was a bit bland if anything, it didn’t really add anything to the pie as a whole.

That being said, I had a good time and gave the server his well deserved tip. I just had higher expectations for the pizza.

Food excellent! Service even better! They were so busy! It was very cold. We were very cold. We had a long wait to get a table. When we got seated the service was par none. Food was even better. They just do everything so right!

Before visiting I was told there are two top deep dish pizza restaurants Giordano’s and Lou Malnati’s. Of the two Giordano’s is far superior, but neither were amazing. One plus is Lou Malnati’s has personal sized pizza. So you can have just to a small taste test. On the menu there is a sausage pizza, a veggie, or build your own. I wish they had more pre-designed pizza options on the menu. My waitress was very nice a did her best to recommend one of the two options. Takes 30 MINUTES for the pizza to cook. Order ahead if possible.

I have been to a place in my hometown that had the same name and it was not nearly as good as this one. I loved this place a lot. It was not the best pizza I have ever had in life, but it was definitely up there in the top ten. I did not have the highest expectations when I came into this restaurant. I was just hungry and looking back now, I am glad that I chose this place. The pizza here was very good. I had a traditional cheese pizza and I was not disappointed by it. I loved the flavors and the people working there all had a lot of passion for what they were doing. I will definitely visit here again if I ever get a chance.
