I kind of expected this place to just be a cool, popular old bar to visit. We were there pretty late and the bar vibe was strong. Not a family-friendly location. Although, it looks like their other locations would be way more family friendly. I was surprised, but I did enjoy the burger. I ordered mine with grilled onions. The flavor was pretty good and the bun was so much softer than I expected. I am not sure if it was good because I came in with pretty low expectations or if it was actually pretty dang good. Although, if you are looking for a top notch burger in the city – I’d go to Au Cheval. #1 for sure. But, be prepared to wait for 2 or so hours.
This place is one of a kind and is truly a great experience. The burgers are great. The staff is wonderful and fun. It was a fun experience trying to find the place but it was well worth it. The history of the place is also one of a kind. FIVE STARS!!!! FIVE STARS!!!
Google maps should have a warning/label for places that are UNDER the street level. I was looking for this place for half an hour before realizing it’s below 🙂
Cool atmosphere, tasty food, fun staff. It’s good to know the story of this place before visiting so you will understand what is going on. I loved to read all the wallpapers and signs.
Went there for the novelty of it, but liked the triple cheeseburger so much, I was back again the next day. T-shirt is only $15, and a truly legit Chicago souvenir…something you won’t find very abundant in this tourist heavy area. All of the staff were really nice (different staff on each visit) and helpful. Bathroom was actually very spacious, modern, and clean. If you drink, they have a large and well stocked bar. If I’m ever back in Chicago, this will again be my first stop!
This review is a bit overdue (about 5 years late!). Rode from Texas to Chicago on my motorcycle, had to stop here for a cheeseburger! I used to eat here every day (40 years ago) when I worked at the Trib, across the street. This is my first time back to Chicago in all these years. I asked about the cook that used to be there (Sam), turns out he’s the owner now! Holy cow! He came to the table & sat with us for about a 1/2 hour, talking about the old days & what’s going on now, He loaded us up with souvenirs to take back to Texas. Had a wonderful time, and a great cheeseburger. We felt like part of the family.
